12 Moments In Anime 2020, #6: A Love Live I Actually Like?!

This one's a more personal entry for me. Not gonna lie, I've never gone anywhere near the Love Live franchise, especially not the first two seasons of it (SIP and Sunshine), and have no interest in doing so any time soon. Why? Because someone on the writing team had the bright idea to make certain characters grab their friends' boobs without their consent and have the whole thing be played for comedy rather than treat it as sexual harassment. Yeah...I've made no secret of the fact that that trope in particular is a HUGE turn-off for me, and I hate it with every fiber of my being. It's the reason I don't go anywhere near shows like Haruhi Suzumiya, Strike Witches, Nagi no Asukara, Adachi and Shimamura, and so on, even though I know they, and LL, have a lot more to offer than just that. To be fair, I did watch the first episodes of both the original Love Live and Sunshine just to say I at least gave it a fair chance. Didn't like them. Both just felt like really cheesy, overly syrupy, corny Disney sitcom anime that were clearly trying way too hard to shill moe tropes and not much else. But hey, just because it's not for me, doesn't mean others won't like it. Love Live has become a huge franchise and is still going strong. But I was sure I'd never go anywhere near the franchise.

Then the Love Live Nijigasaki anime came out.

I originally hadn't been planning to go anywhere near this new series. But some shows I was watching either turned out boring or, in the case of one show, Wandering Witch, began going in questionable directions that really turned me off to it. Out of boredom, I decided to watch this and see if it was any good. Then I watched another episode. And another. And another. And now I caught up with all of the episodes that are currently out, and to my titanic levels of relief: Nijigasaki hasn't had a SINGLE instance of random boob groping or overly pandering fanservice in it. You honestly have NO IDEA how happy this makes me! And it doesn't take much to figure out why: The Nijigasaki anime is being handled by a team completely separate from the other Love Live anime. Jin Tanaka, the scriptwriter, previously did the series composition for Laid-Back Camp and Kira Kira Precure A La Mode and the Star Twinkle Precure movie. Tomoyuki Kawamura, the series director, previously worked on shows such as Anti-Magic Academy, the Gintama movie, Aoi Hana, and others. Granted, that doesn't necessarily mean they made every decision in this particular iteration, as for all we know, they may have had to work with the rules whatever higher-ups enforced. But you know what? I'm relieved and happy with the end result, because after so many years, I finally found a Love Live series I actually like and can call myself a fan of!

Moment #6: Finally finding a Love Live series that I actually like.
